The Flash actress Sasha Calle, who played Supergirl in the film, recently opened up about losing the role despite having a multi-picture deal.
The movie marked her feature film debut, and with the deal signed, everything looked promising. However, The Flash faced many issues during production, from Ezra Miller’s legal troubles to a reboot of the entire franchise with the DCU. When James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios, Calle’s role was discontinued.
In an interview with THR, she described the experience as “heartbreaking” and “confusing”:
“I was so deeply in love with that role. I had conversations about her future many times. When I signed on, it was for a multi-picture deal. That’s a common thing when you join a franchise. So, it was very heartbreaking for me, and it was very confusing. Ultimately, I know that I did my best.”
It’s no wonder she struggled to promote The Flash with all that uncertainty surrounding her. She knew Gunn and Safran had taken over and were planning a major revamp of the DCU, but she had no idea what was going to happen to her or the role of Supergirl. Despite the disappointment, she was obligated to promote the film positively.
Calle is, however, trying to look on the bright side. She broke new ground as the first Latina actress to play Supergirl, and she takes pride in that. She also reached out to Milly Alcock, the actress who was cast as Supergirl in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, offering her support and a few encouraging words.
Fortunately, Calle wasn’t the only one who went through a similar experience. Leslie Grace, who was set to play Batgirl, also had her film canceled. Thanks to this shared experience, Calle and Grace became friends and now support each other. Isn’t that sweet?
