Nicholas Alexander Chavez reflects on his General Hospital debut, overcoming nerves, and moving on to bigger projects.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez reflects on his acting debut on General Hospital, where he played Spencer Cassadine for two years. Talking to PEOPLE, Chavez admitted that the first time he was in front of the camera, he was so nervous that his whole body trembled.

“I had done an acting conservatory, I had done these plays, but I hadn’t actually, really, been in front of a camera before.”

While it wouldn’t be surprising for an actor making his on-screen debut to be nervous, Chavez said it was so bad that he “could barely get the words out.” Yikes.

Chavez was on the show for two years, but before that, he had to work a few “odd” jobs, like selling life insurance and working at a car dealership, which eventually led to him submitting self-tape auditions and landing the role of Spencer Cassadine. That role earned him the 2022 Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series Daytime Emmy Award.

What was devastating for Chavez, though, was the death of his longtime manager, Jenevieve Brewer, just a few months after he joined General Hospital. Two years passed and in January 2024, he quit the role to move on to Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, a series which is now shining a spotlight on a shocking murder case from the 1989. Chavez even recently opened up about how he sees the case.

Reflecting on General Hospital now, Nicholas said he “couldn’t be more grateful” for the show, the people, and the experience it gave him, allowing him to move on to bigger projects like Monsters and Grotesquerie.
