The 78th BAFTAs celebrate 20 years of the EE Rising Star Award—meet this year’s nominees making waves in film and TV!
The 78th British Academy Film Awards are marking the 20th anniversary of the EE Rising Star Award, which was first awarded to James McAvoy in 2006. Over the years, the actors who have won the award have proven that they deserved the accolade, with
Mia McKenna-Bruce being the latest recipient. This year, several promising actors have been nominated for the award, so let’s take a closer look at them.
Marisa Abela has been making a name for herself since 2022, but last year saw her take on her biggest role yet—playing
Amy Winehouse in the Back to Black biopic. She is also currently busy filming the spy thriller Black Bag, alongside stars like
Cate Blanchett and
Michael Fassbender.
Jharrel Jerome
Jharrel Jerome’s role in the biopic Unstoppable, where he portrays wrestling legend Anthony Robles, earned him several accolades at various film festivals before the movie hit theaters in December. Prior to Unstoppable, Jerome was widely praised for his role in When They See Us, which earned him multiple awards, including a Primetime Emmy.
David Jonsson
British actor and writer David Jonsson is just getting started. His first movie role was in 2023’s Rye Lane, and he quickly rose to stardom with his role in last year’s Alien: Romulus, where he played Andy. He also appeared in the historical drama Bonhoeffer as Frank Fisher and has two upcoming projects: The Long Walk with
Cooper Hoffman and Wasteman with
Tom Blyth.
Mikey Madison
American actress Mikey Madison had a remarkable year, with her film Anora sweeping award ceremonies and earning numerous wins for both her and the movie. And the accolades aren’t over yet—she still has several nominations pending, including a Best Actress Oscar nod.
Nabhaan Rizwan
British actor Nabhaan Rizwan has recently been focusing more on TV shows than films, with his last movie being 2023’s drama In Camera. On television, he made a name for himself last year as Dionysus in the Kaos series, as well as in the comedy series Juice. He is also currently working on
Aimee Lou Wood’s Film Club series and the historical drama Dope Girls.
