American actress Kara Young is joining the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of the Obie-winning 2018 play Is God Is by Aleshea Harris! Along with Mallori Johnson, she is set to portray one of two outcast twin sisters asked to kill their father, who disfigured them, Deadline reports.
Is God Is follows Racine and Anaia, twins who were burned and scarred in their childhood. One day, they receive a letter from their dying mother (referred to as SHE or God), who, on her deathbed, tells them that their father (referred to as Man) is responsible for their scars as well as her own medical condition, and asks them to kill him. The twins then travel to meet their father and his new family. Will they kill him? Will they forgive him? You’ll have to find out for yourself.
Young and Johnson will be joined by Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, and Janelle Monáe. The script comes from Aleshea Harris, the author of the original play, which won three Obie Awards.
Although Kara is still more inclined towards theater, where she got her start and earned three consecutive Tony Award nominations (winning the last time), she’s keeping busy with filming. Her latest film, We Strangers, premiered at South by Southwest in March, though it has yet to receive a theatrical release date. She also appeared in an episode of Great Performances earlier this year.
With a few movie roles under her belt, most of them as side characters, this is her first lead role, and we can’t wait to see her on the silver screen!
