The video features innovative choreography and celebrates LGBTQ+ culture.

Julien Baker and TORRES have released a collaborative single, Sugar In The Tank, under Matador Records. This pop-edged Americana project follows Baker’s notable career steps, including her 2017 Matador debut Turn Out The Lights and her participation in the supergroup boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. After concluding boygenius’ world tour, Baker teamed up with TORRES for this new track, which was performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The music video, directed by Caity Arthur, features the queer country dance group Stud Country, led by choreographer and co-founder Sean Monaghan. DJ Jae Cripe from Stud Country described the collaboration as important for trans individuals reconnecting with Southern roots in a supportive environment.

Baker and TORRES thanked the Stud Country community for joining the project and noted how exciting it was to find a space for what they called “cowboy shit” in New York City’s queer scene:

“We were really honored that the Stud Country folks were willing to have fun with us and prepare this line dance for the song! Everyone involved is so talented and they were patient and sweet with us while we learned the moves. For us it’s particularly special to find someplace and some people to do cowboy shit with here in NYC.”
