How Aaron Pierre Approached the Role of John Stewart in 'Lanterns'
Actor Aaron Pierre opens up about preparing to play John Stewart in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’, drawing from the animated series.
The emerging English actor, Aaron Pierre—who recently joined the cast of the upcoming HBO series Lanterns as John Stewart—is opening up about his preparation for the role of Green Lantern.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Pierre shared that he has not watched the 2011 Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds, which was both a critical and financial failure.
However, he has seen the animated Justice League series and its sequel, Justice League Unlimited, which aired in the early 2000s. Pierre also noted that he still plans to watch the 2011 film as part of his preparation for portraying John Stewart.
Lanterns follows Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Pierre), two Green Lanterns investigating a murder on Earth. Peter Safran, Co-CEO of DC, described it as a detective story in the style of True Detective.
Later in the interview, Pierre reflected on the audition process for the series, saying:
“I was just locked into giving the very best version that I could of this beautiful character in the rigorous audition process. I’m a firm believer that what’s meant for you won’t miss you. So, I gave my best and then set it free. Now I’ve been gifted the opportunity to bring this beautiful character to life and, hopefully, I serve John Stewart. Hopefully, I serve the Green Lantern Corps. We’re just really excited for the people to see what we put together here.”
Filming for Lanterns is scheduled to begin in January 2025 and is expected to conclude by June 2025. In an interview with IGN, James Gunn revealed that Lanterns is supposed to be released around the same time as the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for a June 2026 release.
