Teaming with director Eivind Landsvik, Marie Ulven reinvents herself as Maja, a troubled musician turned teacher, set to rediscover hope in her hometown.

Girl In Red is swapping the concert stage for the big screen in Low Expectations, a Norwegian drama directed by newcomer Eivind Landsvik. Still in development, the film is produced by Maipo Film and Snowglobe, with Nordisk Film Distribution handling its release.

Ulven steps into the role of Maja, a 29-year-old artist whose career hits a wall, forcing her back to her hometown to teach high school. This storyline dives into depression and self-discovery, exploring the harsh realities of everyday life.

Landsvik, whose short film Tits premiered at Cannes in 2023, praises Ulven as a “rare gift,” while producer Synnøve Hørsdal calls her the perfect match for the film’s emotional depth. Known globally for her music as Girl In Red, Ulven has earned shoutouts from Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter, and even toured with Taylor Swift. She’s released two albums — If I Could Make It Go Quiet (2021) and I’m Doing It Again Baby! (2024) and her music often confronts themes like mental health and queerness.
