Combster's NYFW Designer Spotlight: Elena Velez
The fashion designer and entrepreneur from Milwaukee is captivating the fashion world with her unique blend of metalwork and high fashion.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins in London, Elena Velez draws inspiration from her Puerto Rican heritage and her upbringing in the industrial rust belt.
Raised as the only child of a ship’s captain, she incorporates themes of strength and femininity into her work, creating a visual identity that she describes as “aggressively delicate” and “anti-fragile.”
Her innovative designs have been recognized for their boldness, with Vogue describing her aesthetic as “explosive and aggressive.”
Velez’s work pays homage to the historic craftsmanship of the American Rust Belt, collaborating with local metalsmith artisans to explore deconstruction and alternative construction methods.
The use of “salvaged” materials reflects her commitment to sustainability while challenging conventional notions of femininity and strength in fashion.
The designer was named on the Dazed 100 List, won the 2022 CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund and the Emerging Designer of the Year award, and became a semi-finalist for the 2024 LVMH Prize.
Her designs have not only made waves on runways but have also been worn by many celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Solange Knowles, FKA Twigs, Julia Fox, Charli XCX, Eartheater, Doja Cat, Grimes, Teyana Taylor, or Tinashe.
Velez’s work has also gained recognition in esteemed publications, including Business of Fashion and Women’s Wear Daily. Her BFA thesis collection was showcased at VFILES Season 10 Runway and London Fashion Week, marking her presence as a promising talent early in her career.
Elena Velez will be showcasing at New York Fashion Week on Sunday, Feb 9.
