Austin Butler’s Role in 'Eddington' Revealed in New Trailer for Ari Aster’s Pandemic Western

Austin Butler joins Joaquin Phoenix in Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’—watch the trailer before it hits theaters July 18, 2025.

American actor Austin Butler, known for his roles in Elvis and Dune: Part Two, is about to make his contemporary Western film debut in American filmmaker Ari AsterAri Aster’s Eddington! And what better way to shorten the wait for the premiere than with an official trailer?

The trailer is presented as a social media feed being slowly scrolled through. Butler, as Vernon Jefferson Peak, is one of the people sharing a message, saying, “Your pain is not a coincidence, you are not coincidence. We are not coincidence,” with a caption that reads, “Take back your mind. Reclaim your identity.”

The trailer also features clips of Joaquin Phoenix as Eddington’s sheriff, Joe Cross; Pedro Pascal as Ted Garcia, the town’s mayor; and Emma Stone as Louise Cross, the sheriff’s wife, among others. By the end of it, it’s revealed that Joe Cross is the one scrolling the feed.

Set in the early days of the pandemic, Eddington follows Sheriff Joe Cross (Phoenix), a small-town lawman whose clash with the bold and divisive Mayor Ted Garcia (Pascal) throws the town of Eddington, New Mexico, into chaos. As tensions rise, Joe’s relationship with his wife Louise (Stone) begins to fall apart, and the whole town feels the heat.

Joining Butler, Phoenix, Pascal, and Stone are American actor and musician Luke GrimesLuke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., and many more.

Following its premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Eddington will hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
