Alba Baptista Headlines New Additions to Amazon’s 'Voltron' Cast
Portuguese actress Alba Baptista joins ‘Voltron’, alongside Samson Kayo and Tharanya Tharan, in Amazon’s live-action robot movie!
Portuguese actress and wife of Chris Evans, Alba Baptista, is joining the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ robot movie Voltron! Deadline reports that she will join the cast alongside British actor and writer Samson Kayo and Australian actress Tharanya Tharan.
The news comes just one day after Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim were cast in undisclosed roles. The first actors announced for Voltron were Daniel Quinn-Toye, who will play the lead, and Henry Cavill, whose role remains a mystery.
Voltron will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ellen Shanman. It’s a live-action adaptation of the anime series, following a new generation of pilots, according to Thurber. However, the plot itself remains under wraps.
The movie has been in development for nearly 20 years, starting in 2005 when producer Mark Gordon first announced the project, with Pharrell Williams attached as a producer and composer. From 2008 to 2011, the project faced legal battles, studio changes, and shifts in the creative team, leaving it stuck in development.
In 2015, production company Relativity Media went bankrupt, and the film rights reverted to Classic Media. By 2016, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation had taken over and restarted development. The project officially came back to life in 2022, under the direction of Thurber, with Amazon winning the bidding war for the rights.
Baptista began her career in Portuguese TV and film, but in 2020, she made her English-language debut in the series Warrior Nun. Last year, she appeared in the horror film Amelia’s Children alongside Brigette Lundy-Paine, and she is currently gearing up for the premiere of Borderline, a comedy thriller with Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson.
