Afrobeats Reigns at MOBO Awards, Featuring Ayra Starr and Darkoo

Ayra Starr and Darkoo turned the 2025 MOBO Awards into an Afrobeats showcase, winning multiple honors and proving the genre’s status in global mainstream music.
Ayra Starr made history by becoming the first African female artist to earn Best International Artist and the first woman in 16 years to take home Best African Music Act. Her album The Year I Turned 21 and singles like Rush played a huge role in her international breakthrough.
British-Nigerian star Darkoo also claimed two major victories, securing Best Female Act and Song of the Year for Favourite Girl, featuring
Dess Dior. Since her 2019 debut Gangsta, Darkoo became known for her take on Afrobeats mixed with rap influences, pushing her sound beyond regional boundaries.
Over the years, the MOBOs have broadened their scope to recognize African music. Although artists like Wizkid,
Burna Boy, and
Tiwa Savage have previously won Afrobeats accolades, Ayra Starr’s Best International Artist award indicates a new peak in mainstream recognition. Plus, as more Afrobeats acts gain traction worldwide, collaborations with US and UK artists are on the rise.
