The Adventurer Allan Quatermain can be Referred to as the Brother of Indiana Jones
In this article, one of the predecessors of the archaeologist and treasure hunter Indiana Jones, the adventurer Allan Quatermain, will be introduced.
Allan Quatermain is a character in the books of Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856 - 1925), who first appeared in his famous tale “King Solomon’s Mines” (1885). It revolves around an expedition to rescue Sir Henry Curtis’ brother, which ultimately leads to the discovery of the fabled mines of the biblical King Solomon. The success of the book led to the writing of numerous sequels and the production of many films. The most well-known of them will be introduced below.
“King Solomon’s Mines” (1985)
“King Solomon’s Mines,” a film directed by Lee_Thompson in 1985, is partially inspired by the original book. Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) is hired by Jesse Huston (Sharon Stone) to help her find her kidnapped father in Africa. He was abducted by the scoundrel Dogati (John Rhys-Davies) and Colonel Bockner (Herbert Lom) because he knows the location of the legendary mines of King Solomon. Interestingly, Kathleen Turner was originally supposed to play the role of Jesse Huston, and John Rhys-Davies appears in the Indiana Jones films, playing the character Sallah, a friend of Indiana Jones.
“Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold” (1986)
Alongside the first film, its sequel titled “Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold” was filmed, directed by Gary Nelson. The central duo portrayed by the same actors embarks on a journey to the “Lost City of Gold” to rescue Allan’s lost brother from there. James Earl Jones appears in the film as Umslopogaas, Quatermain’s friend.
“King Solomon’s Mines” (2004)
King Solomon’s Mines" (2004) This adaptation of the book, directed by Steve Boyum in 2004, is actually a two-part miniseries produced by Hallmark Entertainment. Allan Quatermain (Patrick Swayze) is hired by Elizabeth Maitland (Alison Doody) in this version to help her rescue her kidnapped father. He had previously sent her a map leading to the mines of King Solomon, coveted by his abductor, the sorcerer Teal (Hakeem Kae-Kazim).
“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”
“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is a comic book series created by the renowned writer Alan_Moore in 1999. Its heroes are well-known characters from literature, such as Mina Harker (Dracula, Captain Nemo (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea), Dr. Henry Jekyll (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), and Allan Quatermain. In the film adaptation “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” directed by Stephen Norrington in 2003, the role of Allan Quatermain was portrayed by Sean Connery.
“Deadfall Adventures” (2013)
Deadfall Adventures is an adventure video game from 2013 developed by The Farm 51, featuring James Lee Quatermain as its main protagonist, the grandson of Allan Quatermain. Together with Jennifer Goodwin, they embark on a quest for a rare artifact - the Heart of Atlantis.
