Belizean American actress Kara Young took home the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play at this year’s ceremony. Her powerful performance as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins in the Broadway revival of Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch earned her the prestigious honor.
This win marks a historic milestone, as Young becomes the first Black woman to be nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play for three consecutive years.
Young had already received the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Play for the same role. Her Tony victory further cements her as a rising star and immense talent on the Broadway stage.
