The ceremonial presentation event was quite different in the early days.

On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel during a private dinner attended by around 270 people. This event marked the inception of the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony. During the brief fifteen-minute ceremony, fifteen statuettes were awarded. Interestingly, the names of the winners had been disclosed to the media three months prior to the event.

However, in the subsequent year, when the awards were presented (and for the first time broadcasted on the radio), the results were kept secret, and journalists learned about the winners at 11:00 PM. Following a revelation of the winners by the Los Angeles Times in 1940 before the awards ceremony, sealed envelopes were introduced to maintain secrecy. The first televised broadcast of the awards ceremony occurred in 1953.
