The 30th Critics’ Choice Awards are quickly approaching, and it’s the perfect time to look at which movies are leading in nominations.
The movie category is led by two films: the political thriller Conclave and the musical fantasy Wicked, both earning 11 nominations, including Best Picture. They are followed closely by Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérez, each with 10 nominations.
Conclave follows Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (played by Ralph Fiennes) as he organizes a conclave to elect the next Pope after the current one dies, only to uncover secrets and scandals about the possible candidates. Besides Fiennes, the film stars Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow. It also received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Wicked, based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name, takes place in the Land of Oz before The Wizard of Oz and follows Elphaba Thropp and Galinda as they go from classmates to becoming the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good. The film is led by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Bowen Yang in supporting roles. It also received ten Academy Award nominations, tying with The Brutalist.
Dune: Part Two is a follow-up to the 2021 film Dune and stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, who unites the Fremen people of Arrakis to fight against the Harkonnens. Alongside Chalamet, the film features Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Austin Butler. Not only was it a massive box-office success, but it also secured five Academy Award nominations.
Emilia Pérez follows a Mexican cartel leader who seeks the help of a lawyer to fake his death and transition into a woman, hoping to start a new life. The film stars Zoe Saldaña as lawyer Rita Mora Castro, Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia Pérez / Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, and Selena Gomez as Jessi Del Monte, Manitas’s wife. Emilia Pérez already won four Golden Globes, including Best Picture, and is the most-nominated film at this year’s Academy Awards, with 13 nominations.
