Melissa Barrera sets the tone for ‘Your Monster’ with her original song ‘My Stranger,’ a romantic and playful tribute to a charming stranger.

The Mexican scream queen Melissa Barrera is setting the mood for her upcoming movie Your Monster with an original song, titled My Stranger, performed by Melissa herself. The song is a romantic yet playful expression of affection and desire toward a stranger—an endearing stranger.

Hi, hello, lovely to meet.

Please have a seat

Coffee or tea?

I have Darjeeling, inkling I have a feeling

I’ve seen you before

Those bright eyes, that brown hair

and that ‘Do you dare’ smile

Enchanté, my stranger

Stay for a while.

The song starts gently, with a simple piano melody and Melissa singing about a sense of familiarity toward this stranger she’s delighted to meet. She’s more than happy about his presence, insisting that he stays with her. Just with these few lines, we sense that Melissa’s character Laura in Your Monster will be deeply falling in love with this stranger. Or is it a monster?

Stay for a bit, stay for a touch,

say what you feel, make it too much.

I want this every which way, no need to rush.

Stay for a touch, stay for a tad,

I wanna hide, I wanna be had.

I’ve been too good for too long,

time to be born.

At this point, the song expresses a longing for touch and the yearning for a connection that has been absent for far too long. In Your Monster, Melissa plays a young actress with a cancer diagnosis, traumatized from a breakup. It’s the weirdly charming monster she finds living in her childhood home’s closet that is able to fill the void she’s been feeling inside. The movie is based on Caroline Lindy’s short film and is slightly autobiographical, as it draws from a part of Caroline’s life when she dealt with her own monsters.

Your Monster premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year and will be officially released on October 25. Joining Barrera in the movie are Tommy Dewey, Edmund Donovan, Kayla Foster, and Meghann Fahy. So, let’s start counting down the days to 25th!
