In a recent interview with The Forty-Five, boygenius member Lucy Dacus revealed her “no comment” approach when it comes to her relationship with Julien Baker.

When American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer Lucy DacusLucy Dacus let the world know about her relationship with Julien Baker, the internet lit up. Her latest album Forever Is A Feeling was, in fact, inspired by their romance.

The couple became a symbol of recognition, care, and solidarity for a broader queer culture—offering a kind of quiet reassurance even in the current anti-queer climate following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Even though it’s now widely known that the two are romantically involved, the fear of backlash and misunderstanding still lingers.

Dacus often avoids engaging with fans’ comments about their relationship—not just because it’s personal, but because, in her words, “It only takes a handful to make your life feel like a really easily threatened thing."

She acknowledges the support of a close-knit community, mostly composed of trans people, but adds, “A lot of them are already getting their passports confiscated or have had them be ‘corrected’. The experience of everyday life feels more dangerous. Even just being a visible gay person, you become an outlet for people’s misguided hatred.”

In a time when queer visibility feels increasingly risky, Lucy Dacus and Singer songwriter Julien Baker performs at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, WI Music Benjamin Gibbard in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, USA - 18 Jan 2017Julien Baker continue to live openly—not for applause, but because love, in all its forms, deserves space to exist.
