Kaitlyn Dever will make her debut as Abby in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2, with the character introduced earlier than in the game.

Kaitlyn Dever is about to make her debut on The Last of Us as the controversial character Abby, and her introduction to the show will come earlier than in the game the series is based on.

During a recent press conference at the Season 2 premiere, co-creator Israeli-American writer, creative director, designer, and programmerNeil Druckmann revealed that Abby will be introduced in the series right away, so that the audience can understand her more easily. Druckmann then explained the decision to introduce Abby as early as possible:

“In the game, you play as Abby, so you immediately form an empathic connection with her, because you’re surviving as her — you’re running through the snow, you’re fighting infected. And we can withhold certain things and make it a mystery that will be revealed later in the story. We couldn’t do that in the show because you’re not playing as her.”

In another interview, Druckmann also revealed that Dever already had a connection to The Last of Us, having previously worked with him on the planned The Last of Us movie. In that version, she would have played Ellie — but the project ultimately didn’t move forward.

The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on April 13, 2025, with Season 3 currently in development.
