- Alongside acting, Sophie Thatcher has always been musically inclined; her debut EP Pivot & Scrape is a self-made blend of dreamy and noisy sounds.
Sophie Thatcher started performing early, singing in her church choir where her mother played piano, before diving into local theater.
To prepare for Heretic, she studied the “clean girl aesthetic” of real young Mormon women on Instagram.
Sophie Thatcher received an astrological reading from an Uber driver, who uncannily described her life as a double Libra with a Cancer Moon, surprising her with its accuracy.
Growing up in the Mormon faith in Chicago, Thatcher struggled with anxiety over religious teachings, eventually leaving the church as she pursued acting and found freedom in her “otherness.”
She says, “I remember thinking when I was 8, There’s no way I’m going to Heaven. I’ve already fucked it all up. It’s too late now.”
- When she’s creating melodies, she experiences a meditative state similar to being high on drugs without actually being on them.
- Sophie recorded a DJ mix on the most esteemed independent music platforms NTS Radio in 2024
Growing up, she loved listening to Elliott Smith, recording atmospheric music, and creating eccentric plays with her twin sister. She is also a huge fan of Radiohead.
She has shared that one of her dream collaborators would be filmmaker David Lynch, whose surreal and psychological storytelling aligns with her own creative interests.
Despite her bold characters, Sophie admits she can be reserved and shy in real life, using acting as a way to express parts of herself she might normally keep hidden.
