British-French actress Emma Mackey, known for her role in Sex Education, attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas with
Jamie Lee Curtis to introduce their upcoming movie Ella McKay and to present its writer and director,
James L. Brooks, with a Cinema Verité trophy.
While on stage, Mackey described Ella McKay as “a comedy about the complicated politics that arise when a young woman’s stressful career clashes with her chaotic family life.”
Curtis then introduced Mackey’s character as “an idealistic young politician” and revealed that she plays her aunt in the film—who is the backbone of the family, as well as Ella’s “biggest cheerleader.”
Following the introduction and James L. Brooks’ acceptance speech, the very first footage from the film was revealed. It showed an argument between Ella and her dad, played by Woody Harrelson, and her subsequent promotion to take over her mentor’s job as the state’s governor.
In addition to Mackey, Curtis, and Harrelson, the film features an ensemble cast including Ayo Edebiri,
Albert Brooks,
Kumail Nanjiani,
Spike Fearn,
Jack Lowden, and more.
Ella McKay hits theaters on September 19, 2025.
