Doechii Reveals the Album That Inspired Her Rap Career and Shares the Stage with Her Idol

Doechii’s mom showed her this album when she was a little girl, and that changed everything for the artist.
Doechii shared that the first full-length album she ever listened to was The Miseducation of
Lauryn Hill.
She explained that her mom would play it every day on their way to school for years, and she would sing the songs as if she had written them, imagining herself on stage.
She mentioned that each song deepened her love for music and sparked her curiosity to write raps. Her favorite lyric in Doo Wop is “don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem,” which she said stuck with her whenever she wanted to “get even” or harden her heart towards those who wronged her.
Doechii revealed that she carried Lauryn Hill’s principles with her during her coming-of-age years and continues to do so in her current career.
She expressed that Lauryn Hill’s lyrics are still close to her heart and called the honor of receiving this recognition the greatest that hip-hop could give her.
And here’s the kicker—earlier today, Billboard reported that Doechii actually shared a stage with her idol in Miami over the weekend, performing the legendary Doo Wop together.
The collaboration took place during Hill’s headlining set at the Jazz in the Gardens Festival at Hard Rock Stadium on International Women’s Day (March, 8).
Hill welcomed Doechii on stage, calling her a sister. For the rising star Swamp Princess, it was a dream come true.
