Bella Ramsey Reflects on Autism Diagnosis During 'The Last of Us' Season One

Bella Ramsey reveals their autism diagnosis during filming of ‘The Last of Us,’ calling it a freeing and self-affirming moment.
The Last of Us actor Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the series, recently opened up about their autism diagnosis and revealed that it was a crew member who prompted them to seek a psychiatric evaluation.
The crew member had an autistic daughter and recognized similar behaviours in Ramsey. The psychiatric assessment confirmed what they had long suspected.
Speaking to British Vogue about their diagnosis, Ramsey said:
“The label of being autistic has been so helpful to me because that’s helped me to understand myself.”
For Ramsey, the diagnosis wasn’t just a label — it was freeing. It gave them a new level of understanding and compassion toward themselves.
Ramsey will return as Ellie in the second season of The Last of Us, premiering April 13, 2025, on HBO.
