It’s kind of wild how you were following that one guy pulling off gnarly tricks around the streets of New York, and now, all of a sudden, you realize he’s a legit hip-hop artist.

Sage Gabriel Carlos Atreyu Elsesser, known professionally as Navy Blue, was born on January 31, 1997. He is a multifaceted American artist, recognized as a rapper, record producer, skateboarder, and model.

Raised in Los Angeles, Elsesser became a professional skateboarder in 2014 through the skate collective and clothing brand Fucking Awesome and later worked with brands like Supreme and Converse.

He began releasing music on SoundCloud in 2015 under the name Navy Blue. However, his music career did not take off until 2020, when he founded his own label, Freedom Sounds.

The artist got his first critical acclaim after releasing his first studio album Àdá Irin. He followed this with two more albums: Song of Sage: Post Panic! (2020) and Navy’s Reprise (2021) with the track Timberwolves gaining over 4 million listens on Spotify.

Just like with skateboarding, you can’t fake music talent. It is evident in every possible way with Navy Blue.

Navy Blue’s music doesn’t sound like your typical beat-focused hip-hop tracks. Instead, he utilises a warm, vinyl-like scratchy sound that can even disorient the listener at times.

His albums are easy to listen to in full, whether you’re playing them in the background or focusing on the lyrics and diving deep into your thoughts. There’s only one way to find out—check out his latest music video Take Heed on YouTube.
