Rage Fans Outraged: Fantano Slams 2hollis and Nettspend's Musical Identity
Fantano’s calling out the rage microgenre, and it’s got fans talking — who’s really shaping the sound of today’s hip hop?
Anthony Fantano, the internet’s busiest music nerd, is back with another hot take and this time it’s all about rage wave. This microgenre within trap music — characterized by distorted beats and heavy bass — has taken off recently and seems to be the next big thing in hip hop.
In his Weekly Track Roundup, around the 7-minute mark, Fantano called out a bunch of underground rappers, namely 2hollis and Nettspend, saying they take a lot from big names like Playboi Carti. As you can guess, that didn’t sit well with rage fans, and many of them proceeded to storm social media to voice their opinion.
Fantano’s response? Even though 2hollis and Nettspend are killin’ it in the rage scene, you can’t forget their sound has roots in hip hop’s past and they are building on what the legends did before them. He further pointed out that the rage sound has permeated mainstream music, with various popular artists adopting its aesthetics, making it a widespread phenomenon rather than a strictly underground one.
At the end of the day, whether 2hollis and Nettspend are really copying Playboi Carti is up for debate. But one thing’s for sure: Fantano will keep the hot takes coming, even if it means burning bridges with die-hard rage fans.
