Rachel Sennott Arrested for CBD in the Cayman Islands and It’s Funnier Than You Think
Comedian Rachel Sennott was arrested in the Cayman Islands for CBD possession, leading to an awkward yet hilarious story.
Comedian Rachel Sennott has another story under her belt that she can share during her stand-up performances. During her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Rachel revealed that she was arrested in the Cayman Islands for possession of CBD. Rachel described the arrest as embarrassing, saying she would rather have been arrested for protesting, shoplifting, or something more “awesome.”
Due to her forgetfulness (as she admits in the interview), she completely forgot to check the international travel laws in the Cayman Islands regarding CBD, which is prohibited there but legal in the U.S. Rachel speculated that she might have been subjected to the search because she was wearing an NYU t-shirt, but who knows?
Rachel then shared that an officer at the airport went through her tampons and joked that she had read her journal. As the officer continued searching her belongings, she found what Rachel described as “mom grass” — CBD, in other words.
Upon the discovery, Rachel was arrested, and her phone and passport were confiscated. Luckily, before handing over her phone, she managed to text her lawyer a simple message: “I’m in jail.”
Locked up in jail, Rachel had just one person she could contact — a friend who was supposed to meet her upon arrival. After some time passed and while waiting for her friend, she was interviewed by the police. Upon learning who Rachel was, they immediately started playing clips of her work. But to Rachel’s dismay, their reaction was: “This isn’t for us.” Bummer, right?
So, who saved Rachel in the end? Her 23-year-old assistant, Claire, thought she had been kidnapped and called the embassy. Claire then contacted Rachel’s lawyer and the hotel, which led to another lawyer flying in to get Rachel out of jail. There’s even a mugshot, but unfortunately, it’s not for our eyes to see.
Well, let’s hope Rachel has the travel laws figured out better next time!
