The Maika Monroe-led horror film Longlegs, co-starring Nicolas Cage, enters the Oscar race! Fangoria reports that the movie is aiming for all the major categories.
Longlegs will compete in the Best Picture category, with director Osgood Perkins aiming for Best Director, Monroe for Best Actress, and Nic Cage for Best Supporting Actor. The Longlegs studio, Neon, is also supporting Alicia Witt for Best Supporting Actress and Blair Underwood for Best Supporting Actor. As if that weren’t enough, Neon is also vying for a Best Action Ensemble nomination and a Best Original Screenplay nod for Perkins.
The movie is a major success for Neon, being both a critical and box office hit, with $109 million in worldwide earnings against a budget of less than $10 million. It’s the studio’s highest-grossing film and the highest-grossing independent film of 2024. The Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro has also praised both the film and Perkins’ work.
The official description of Longlegs is as follows:
“In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.”
Monroe stars as Lee Harker, an FBI agent assigned to solve the Longlegs case. Nicolas Cage plays the androgynous occultist serial killer Longlegs, nailing the role. Blair Underwood appears as Lee’s superior, Agent Carter, and Alicia Witt portrays Ruth Harker, Lee’s devout mother.
Perkins truly nailed the casting, and now it remains to be seen how the cast will fare in the prestigious categories at the Academy Awards. The ceremony will take place in March of next year, so let’s hope Longlegs receives the recognition it deserves!
