Maika Monroe and Chloe Okuno Reunite to Flip Vampire Lore on Its Head with 'Brides'
Maika Monroe and Chloe Okuno reunite for ‘Brides,’ a daring feminist twist on vampire lore set in 1960s Italy!
The Longlegs actress Maika Monroe is reuniting with director Chloe Okuno for another horror flick! This time, she’s set to join Brides, a vampire story set in 1960s Italy, as reported by Deadline.
Monroe and Okuno previously worked together on Okuno’s feature directorial debut, the 2022 horror film Watcher, which received positive reviews from both critics and fans alike. Monroe’s performance, as well as Okuno’s directorial work, was praised from all sides.
The plot of the new film revolves around Sally Bishop, a woman who, with her husband, travels to a remote villa in Italy after experiencing a nervous breakdown. There, she meets the villa’s owner, a count who takes a liking to Sally but ends up getting more than he bargained for.
The screenplay comes from Okuno herself and is described as flipping Bram Stoker’s Dracula narrative upside down, incorporating feminist themes and societal repression. The project is currently in pre-production, with filming expected to start in the spring of next year.
Monroe has a packed year ahead, with In Cold Light likely releasing soon as it’s already in post-production. She’s also filming They Follow, a sequel to the massively successful It Follows, which has gained a cult following since its release. Additionally, Monroe recently joined Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a lead in the upcoming remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
Given Watcher’s success, it’s clear that Monroe and Okuno make a great team in the horror genre. We’ll see how they handle a vampire flick rooted in classic literature.
