Combster's PFW Designer Spotlight: Alain Paul
With a deep-rooted connection to dance, Paul views it not merely as movement but as an expression of posture, artistic freedom, and gender nonconformity.
Alain Paul, an innovative designer who co-founded his eponymous label in 2023, is redefining the boundaries of fashion through a conceptual approach that draws heavily from contemporary ballet.
This philosophy informs the brand’s vocabulary, which emphasizes a contemporary yet timeless wardrobe crafted from exceptional fabrics and precise construction.
Born in Hong Kong in 1989 to a French father and a Danish-Brazilian mother, he moved to France in 1997. His early life was steeped in the discipline of dance, as he enrolled in the Opéra École National Supérieur de Danse de Marseille, where he trained rigorously in contemporary ballet.
At eighteen, seeking a new outlet for self-expression, he transitioned to fashion studies in Paris, blending his artistic background with design.
Paul’s career gained momentum when he joined the avant-garde fashion collective Vetements in 2014, working under the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia. He remained there until 2017, before contributing to Virgil Abloh’s design team at Louis Vuitton from 2018 to 2022.
Now, with ALAINPAUL, co-founded with his husband Luis Philippe, Alain Paul is poised to make a significant impact in the fashion industry.
His collections promise to merge the rigor of ballet with high fashion, offering garments that celebrate the body’s movement and form.
Alain Paul will be presenting at the Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, September 24.
