On the eve of the Oscars on January 9th, the annual Governors Awards took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Hollywood and Highland Center. During this ceremony organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, three awards are presented. These awards include the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, which are irregularly given.
Annually, it also includes The Academy Honorary Award, the presentation of which during The Governors Awards has replaced the previous practice of announcing it at the Oscars since 2009 (though the recent recipients are mentioned during the Oscars). The Academy Honorary Award, given for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy,” was awarded this year to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, and Carol Littleton.
Past recipients have included individuals such as Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Chan, and Hayao Miyazaki.
