Biography

Thomas de Courtenay, 5th/13th Earl of Devon was an English nobleman and magnate. His seat was at Colcombe Castle near Colyton, Devon, and later at the principal historic family seat of Tiverton Castle, after his mother's death. Courtenay's family was traditionally the dominant political force in his county of Devon, but this was threatened by the rise in influence of several other families in the region, during his tenure as earl. Much of his life was spent in armed territorial struggle against his near-neighbour, Sir William Bonville of Shute, at a time when central control over the provinces was weak. This series of disputes became entangled in the contemporary national struggle for control of the government of the weak king Henry VI, and resulted in Courtenay becoming involved in the Wars of the Roses.
