Nicholas Alexander Chavez reveals his fear of true crime and a rare NBA card he received while starring in ‘Monsters.’

The Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story star Nicholas Alexander Chavez recently opened up about his childhood relationship with true crime, and his response might surprise you.

While speaking with USA Today, the actor was asked whether he ever expected to become such a true-crime buff—or to be asked about true crime as frequently as he is now—following the success of the series.

Chavez explained that, as a kid visiting his grandmother’s house (she was a big 48 Hours Mystery fan), he would always ask her to change the channel because it “scared the ever-living hell” out of him. It terrified him so much that it even gave him nightmares.

Continuing his answer, he said he really got into true crime only in the past year while preparing to play Lyle Menendez. He described that world as “really dark” to explore.

Adding to the surprise, Chavez shared that he received a rare sports card from several people. The card in question is a 1990 NBA trading card featuring basketball player Mark Jackson, with the Menendez brothers visible in the background. One of the people who gave him the card was his godfather, who presented it last Christmas just as Chavez was starting to film the show.

Currently, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is nominated for three Golden Globe Awards: one for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film; one for Cooper Koch, nominated for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film; and one for Javier Bardem, nominated for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
