Combster's NYFW Designer Spotlight: Bach Mai
Raised in Houston, Texas, by Vietnamese immigrant parents, Bach developed a passion for fashion at an early age, particularly captivated by haute couture.
Bach Mai is a luxury womenswear brand rooted in the vibrant spirit of New York City, founded by the Texas-born designer who brings a wealth of couture experience to the table.
His journey began as an apprentice with the Houston Ballet, where he crafted dresses for friends and family, igniting his love for dressmaking. After honing his craft at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he earned a nomination for Womenswear Designer of the Year, Bach gained invaluable experience working with esteemed fashion houses such as Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta.
His pursuit of excellence led him to Paris, where he received a master’s degree from the Institut Français de la Mode and designed for Prabal Gurung.
At Maison Margiela, under the mentorship of John Galliano, Bach served as First Design Assistant, specializing in Artisanal Haute Couture collections, which further refined his skills in the intricate art of couture.
In 2019, Bach returned to New York with a vision to establish his own brand. Partnering with Hurel, one of France’s oldest and most prestigious fabric houses, he launched Bach Mai as a luxury ready-to-wear and made-to-order collection that embodies a philosophy of irreverent glamour and unabashed femininity.
Bach’s designs reflect a deep understanding of the relationship between designer and client, aiming to make every person feel beautiful through his creations. Bach Mai will be presenting at the NYFW on Sunday, September 8.
