Car Seat Headrest Return to Rock Sound with New Album 'The Scholar'

Following 2020’s ‘Making a Door Less Open,’ the record marks a return to heavier rock sounds without sacrificing immersive, concept-driven narratives.
Car Seat Headrest is set to drop their new concept album, The Scholars, on May 2 via Matador Records, marking the band’s first release in four years. The record unfolds at the fictional Parnassus University and delves into themes of life, death, and rebirth — an idea shaped by frontman Will Toledo’s spiritual journey and the upheaval of the pandemic.
The 11-minute lead single Gethsemane introduces Rosa, a medical student who revives a deceased patient and unlocks her hidden healing powers, while uncovering ancient forces secretly running the school. Produced by Toledo with bandmates Ethan Ives, Andrew Katz, and Seth Dalby, The Scholars returns to Car Seat Headrest’s rock roots while retaining a theatrical, story-driven feel.
A full tour supports the release, featuring festival gigs like Kilby Block Party on May 16 and Governors Ball on June 7, plus major stops at The Anthem, Mission Ballroom, and The Greek. Presale opens today, with general sales on March 7.
