Asa Butterfield Returns to TV with 'Gnomes' Filming Now in Melbourne

Asa Butterfield leads the new Stan horror-comedy Gnomes, now filming in Melbourne and premiering in 2026.
Asa Butterfield, known for his work in Sex Education, is taking on a new lead role in the Stan Original series Gnomes. Production for the show began in Melbourne, Victoria in June 2025, with Butterfield starring as Senior Sergeant Arnold Kipps. He’s joined by
Megan Smart from Class of ‘07, who plays his ex-partner and ex-girlfriend, Ellie McKay.
The story kicks off when Ellie arrives in the small town of Nompton to shut down Arnold’s police station, but things quickly spiral when the ancient Gnome Queen is awakened, leading to an invasion of murderous gnomes.
The series mixes horror and comedy, with Arnold and Ellie having to work together with local misfit officers, teenagers, and the mayor to try to save their town. The cast also includes well-known Australian actors such as Darren Gilshenan,
Alison Whyte,
Tegan Higginbotham,
Matt Okine,
Brett Tucker, and
Luke McGregor.
Tess Haubrich plays the Gnome Queen.
Gnomes is created by Joel Kohn and directed by Matthias Hoene, with support from Screen Australia, VicScreen, and Screen Queensland. The series is set to premiere on Stan in 2026.
