The world bids farewell to the actor, who among other roles, portrayed pilot Charles “Chappy” Sinclair in the film series “Iron Eagle.”

According to the Associated Press Agency, the first African American man to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor died Friday, March 30, in Santa Monica, California. Louis Gossett Jr. was born in 1936 in Coney Island, New York.

He began his career at the age of 17 as a stage actor and in 1977, he was awarded an Emmy for his performance in the miniseries “Roots”, where he portrayed the character Fiddler. In 1982, he was honored by the Academy when his portrayal of Emil Foley in the film “An Officer and a Gentleman” (directed by Taylor Hackford) earned him the award for Best Supporting Actor.

Audiences can also remember him for his roles in films such as “Enemy Mine” (1985) and “Iron Eagle” (1986) and its sequels. His voice was also featured in the famous game “Half-Life 2” (2004).
