Beginnings: Fan Fair
The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972 at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. Organized by the Country Music Association (CMA), the event aimed to bring fans closer to their favorite artists. Stars like Paul McCartney (1942), Dolly Parton (1946), and Porter Wagoner (1927 - 2007) were among the initial performers, quickly boosting the event’s popularity.
Transition to CMA Music Festival
In 2004, the festival was rebranded as the CMA Music Festival and moved to downtown Nashville, utilizing iconic venues like Nissan Stadium and Riverfront Park. This transition attracted even more attendees and expanded the program to include nightly concerts, fan meet-and-greets, and exclusive events.Prominent artists such as Keith Urban (1967), Carrie Underwood (1983), and Miranda Lambert (1983) ensured that the festival appealed to both longtime country fans and new audiences.
Iconic Performances
CMA Fest is known for its unforgettable performances. Garth Brooks (1962) has thrilled audiences with his energetic shows, while Taylor Swift (1989) experienced pivotal moments of her career at the festival. In 2017, a joint performance by Brad Paisley (1972) and Joe Walsh (1947) showcased how country music can blend with rock. That same year, soulful performances by Chris Stapleton (1978) and his wife Morgane touched fans deeply.
The Modern Era: CMA Fest Today
In 2018, the festival officially adopted the name CMA Fest. Today, it spans more than 300 performances across multiple stages. With modern technology and social media, the festival reaches fans worldwide.
